[after]birth

your father saw
you first, the quick
arrival of a bent moon

he sliced the tether
and fumbled his words.

before i saw you:
love, love, love tossed
heavy across the bed

there was never
if, only when.

our first hellos
slapped loud and
quick as a screen door

skin to skin
blood and breath.

you, quiet as a garden
cycled like a chameleon:
indigo, violet, plum magic

i held you to me
and offered gold.
